Staying Hydrated as a Type One Diabetic

Staying Hydrated as a Type One Diabetic

Let’s chat about something super important – staying hydrated. We’ve all heard it before: "Drink more water!" But as a Type One Diabetic, hydration is even more crucial. Here’s why keeping those H2O levels up is key to managing our diabetes.

1. Blood Sugar Management
Hydration plays a huge role in regulating blood sugar levels. When we're dehydrated, the sugar in our bloodstream becomes more concentrated, which can lead to higher blood sugar levels. Drinking enough water helps our kidneys flush out excess glucose through urine, keeping our levels in check.

2. CGM Accuracy
If you’re using a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) like me, staying hydrated is a must. CGMs measure glucose levels in the interstitial fluid (the fluid between our cells). When we’re well-hydrated, this fluid is more stable, leading to more accurate readings. So, sipping on water regularly can actually help your CGM give you better data!

3. Avoiding Ketoacidosis
We all want to avoid diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), right? DKA happens when our bodies run out of insulin and start breaking down fat for fuel, producing ketones. Dehydration can accelerate this process. Drinking water helps dilute ketones in the blood and supports our kidneys in flushing them out.

4. Energy and Well-being
High blood sugars can make us feel tired and sluggish. Hydration boosts energy levels and overall well-being. Plus, when we’re hydrated, our bodies function more efficiently – from digestion to circulation.

Tips to Stay Hydrated:

  • Carry a Water Bottle: Keep a reusable water bottle with you and sip throughout the day.
  • Infuse Your Water: Add a splash of flavour with slices of lemon, cucumber, or mint leaves.
  • Set Reminders: Use phone alarms or hydration apps to remind you to drink up.
  • Eat Water-Rich Foods: Munch on fruits and veggies like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges.

Remember, Diabuddies, staying hydrated is a simple yet powerful way to manage our diabetes and feel our best. So, let’s raise our water bottles and toast to better health!

Stay hydrated, stay fabulous!
