Owning Your Diabetes Tech with Confidence

Owning Your Diabetes Tech with Confidence

In a world that sometimes stares, I've learned that my diabetes tech isn't something to hide – it's a badge of strength.

It's a reminder, not just to me but to everyone around, that taking care of yourself deserves to be celebrated, not concealed. So, let them stare, let them wonder. This journey is about embracing every aspect of who I am, tech and all, and owning it with pride.

But that didn't come easy to me, I used to be so embarassed to wear my Freestyle Libre or Dexcom on display and refused to get an insulin pump because I wanted to hide my diabetes. So I get it!

Here are 5 tips I think can help:

1. Embrace the Fashion Aspect:
Turn your diabetes tech into a stylish accessory! Decorate your device with stickers and diabetic device patches. Treat it as a fashion statement, and you might find yourself feeling proud to showcase your unique and personalised gear.

2. Educate and Advocate:
Knowledge is empowering. Take the time to educate yourself about your diabetes tech and its importance. When you understand how it contributes to your well-being, you can confidently share this information with others. Advocating for diabetes awareness can boost your confidence in wearing your tech openly.

3. Connect with the Community:
Joining diabetes communities or social media groups can be incredibly uplifting. Seeing others proudly display their diabetes tech and sharing their experiences can inspire and reassure you. Connect with individuals who have similar devices and learn from their journeys.

4. Start Small:
If you're feeling self-conscious, take small steps. Begin by exposing your diabetes tech in environments where you feel comfortable. Over time, as you become more accustomed to it, you might find it easier to wear it openly in various settings.

5. Flip the Perspective:
Instead of focusing on potential judgment, remind yourself of the strength and resilience it represents. Your diabetes tech is a symbol of your commitment to managing your health. Shift your perspective to see it as a badge of courage, and you may find the embarrassment fading away.
