Reminder: Don’t Forget Your Medical Exemption Certificate!

Reminder: Don’t Forget Your Medical Exemption Certificate!

As a Type 1 diabetic living in England, did you know that you're entitled to free NHS prescriptions, including insulin? But here's the catch—by law, you need a valid medical exemption certificate to qualify. It's one of those details that can fly under the radar until you’re hit with an unexpected charge or, worse, a fine.

I first shared this nugget of information on my Instagram stories a few years ago, and the reaction was surprising—so many of my followers didn’t know! And I get it, it’s not always something that’s front of mind when you're juggling blood sugars, carb counting, and life.

Here's the deal: your medical exemption certificate needs to be up to date, and it actually *expires every five years*! Yep, despite the fact that Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition, this certificate needs renewing regularly. If you’re unaware of the expiry, you could end up being charged for your prescriptions, which no one wants.

While the NHS does send out reminder letters, the system isn't perfect. Some people have found themselves without that timely nudge and ended up with fines, like @sherbetneedles shared in their own frustrating experience.

So, what can you do to avoid this hassle? Check your certificate's expiry date and, if it’s approaching or already expired, reach out to your GP or healthcare provider to renew it. You can also find all the necessary info on the NHS website.

It's such an easy thing to forget but so important to stay on top of—don’t let it slip! Make sure your exemption certificate is up to date so you can continue accessing your insulin and other prescriptions without worrying about any unwanted surprises.

Stay proactive, stay informed, and keep your prescriptions free—because diabetes is enough to deal with already!
